Masters program in Computer Science at Qafqaz University in cooperation with GU/Chalmers

roadmap                                (Reference document - mostly for teachers)
Welcome to the information page for the Master's program in Computer Science at Qafqaz University, given in cooperation with the Department of Computer Science at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology (and also a part of the IT University of Göteborg, which is a network for cooperation in the ICT area between the two universities and externally, and which initiated this cooperation together with the Ministry of Communication in Azerbaijan).

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Gothenburg offers a wide range of courses mainly in areas where it has strong and internationally recognised research, ensuring up to date and cutting-edge content.
The program at Qafqaz University will closely follow the corresponding Master's programs in Computer Science in Gothenburg, and consists of a selection of the courses that can be studied on the Master's level in Gothenburg, providing an excellent general purpose Master's program in Computer Science.
The program is given for the first time beginning in September 2009. Responsible for this program in Gothenburg is Dag Wedelin. For information at Qafqaz University, including questions about applying to the program, please contact Bahram Atabeyli (batabeyli at qafqaz dot edu dot az).

Scope and aim

Computer Science (or Computing Science) is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. Computer Science has many sub-fields. Some relate to properties of computational problems (such as the theory of algorithms), while others emphasise the computation of specific results (such as computer graphics). Important parts of Computer Science are methods for implementing computations (programming languages and programming language theory), and the development process (software engineering).
The aim of the program is to give the student a solid knowledge of Computer Science, together with the skills to design and develop advanced computer software in different contexts. This also includes skills in communication, general problem solving and an ability to apply a scientific approach. The program will make the student well prepared for work in industry as well as for academic research.
The program requires two years of full time studies, according to international standards. This is what international companies typically expect of a Master's level engineer.
The language of education is English only.

Content and organization

The programme corresponds to 120 ECTS points, corresponding to two years of full time studies. A course normally corresponds to 7.5 ECTS points. The program ends with a Master's thesis, corresponding to 30 ECTS points, to be pursued either as an academic project, or in cooperation with an industrial partner. The Master's thesis can be done individually or in pairs of two students.
The courses that have been selected for the Master's program in Computer Science at Qafqaz University are:
Year 1 (organized in study periods) Year 2 (organized in study periods)
  • Masters Thesis (Student Portal) (Compressed Guide) A lot of information is available through these links, including instructions for a company that provides a project, for students about how to plan the project and write the thesis, and for the university. The thesis project begins part time in study period 2.
The courses have been selected to give a balance between breadth and depth, and together comprise an excellent general purpose Master's program in Computer Science. Please note the program may be adapted and developed over time, for example by adding long or short courses given specifically for this program, if this is considered to improve the quality or relevance of the program. For an in-depth description of the structure of the program, see the link below.

Organization of the program

The main idea of the model of cooperation between GU/Chalmers and Qafqaz University is that courses given in Gothenburg are mirrored in Baku. This means that exactly the same courses are given at Qafqaz University at the same time as they are given at GU/Chalmers. For each course there is a local teacher in Baku, with appropriate support from the main teacher in Gothenburg. Teachers from Gothenburg will also visit Baku as needed. The program will require that every student has his/her own course literature in the form of textbooks or other material for each course studied.

Useful links

  • Chalmers Student Portal. In the Student Portal you can find definitions of all courses, and sometimes links to their respective homepages. Examination dates can also be found by searching for the course in the Student Portal. Press the English flag if you happen to get a page in Swedish.

Entrance requirements and how to apply

The general criteria for admission are (with reservation for admission according to the rules of the national Azeri system):
  • A BSc degree with major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of English in speaking and writing (exact requirements to be determined).
  • Mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, mathematical statistics)
  • Basic Computer Science (programming (more than a first course), data structures and algorithms)

Degree

A degree will be issued by Qafqaz University together with an official statement of cooperation from the IT-University of Göteborg. It will be stated that the Master's program at Qafqaz University corresponds to the Master's program in Gothenburg, both in level and content.
